Tyson before Cus d'amato died and before firing rooney was the best fighter who ever lived. Once Cus died no one else could control mikes baser instincts and his rage. Cus got him to use it in the ring. And for those who say tyson was only a street fighter, he used a double left to the body to set up his devastating right upper cut. That is called boxing. Sure he knocked a lot of boxers heads off early but not every fight was a round 1 knockout. I have seen every fight and you can't compare young tyson to his older self any more than you can compare Ali to young tyson. No contest tyson knocks him out early but the later tyson would likely lose in a decision.

I stumbled through here. I've seen so many posts on the internet that I rarely care to even reply. What was that Shakespeare said about raising your sword against the ocean...? There's just too much bad history, lazy thinking, and utter crap out there to respond to. That said, I couldnt resist adding thoughts to the discussion. I thought I would debunk some of the inane/mythical statements I just read:
Myth: Tson is dumb. Do not be mistaken. Mike Tyson is NOT stupid. He's also not socially adjusted. Confusing the two is your error, not his, and it's a lousy way to go through life on your part. Mike's responsible for his own actions, but mark my words: he's not a dumb man. Far, far from it, and that's one of the tragedies of his character.
Myth: Tyson isnt skilled. Please have more than a dilettante's interest in the sport if you're going to make inane comments about Tyson. Tyson, in his prime, before his emotional/mental degradation, was a PHENOMENALLY, EXQUISITELY GIFTED fighter. He slipped beautifully, had perfect hands, tremendous defense -- the full lot. He was no mere brawler. He fed himself the idea that he was the animal you told him he way, and he believed it. He stopped everything D'Amato taught him.
Myth: Beating Ali. It would have been an interesting fight, but Ali would have eventually beaten Tyson. Ali himself would have lost to Jack Johnson. Jack Johnson would have been a better fight with Ali. Do you see how it works? Do you see how boxing works?
Myth: Tyson was the best puncher of all time. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Please, go crack a history on boxing. I have many to recommend. Tyson wasnt even in the top 10, and Ring Magazine has him listed 16 (can't remember). Who was a FEARSOME puncher? Max Bear. Sonny Langford. Sandie Saddler. Ruben Olivares. Stanley Ketchell, who, if he was Tyson's weight would have been a puncher whose power you cannot fathom. Or Earner Shavers, who is regarded by most of the people who fought him as the hardest hitter they ever faced. Earnie Shavers people, do you even KNOW that name?
Some of you folks dont even mention names like these. I'm not indicting the whole group, but nearly all I see is inane, thoughtless, reactionary postings without context, reality, or history. Aside from boxing, is this how many of you think? Just through a shitbrained post out theere and let it representing your thinking? Wow.

It's Sonny Liston and Sam Langford u 'expert'. Tyson would have beaten Liston and Sam badly anyway. Just take type in any of those names you listed and you will see how just how slow (excluding maybe Ali and Floyd Patterson) boxers were back then. Tyson had the mass plus the acceleration which = force... which is why he is the most powerful fighter of all time.

i have already acknowledged tyson's gifts. i have also written articles for boxing magazines defending his intelligence. i love the way he took the championship at such a young age. i never said tyson wasn't gifted or impressive, but he is, unequivocally, missing a quality possessed by the truly greats. he probably lost it along the way. further, your perception of him is a product of modern media; he is no greater a boxer because of the machine that fed that perception than are today's overhyped (but still talented) bands superior to the acts that paved the way for them.
mike tyson isnt even among the top-10 in Ring Magazine's "Top 100 Punchers of All Time", "mr physics expert." In fact, he's not even in their top-15 (and the list was compiled by established reporters who know more about the sport than I and certainly more than you. so much for being the most powerful fighter of all time.
furtherr, ali and patterson's styles are unrelated. the point makes little sense. ken norton or a foreman in his prime vs. tyson are much more interesting matchups. as far as speed, ali was blindingly fast but deceptive in it because he moved so cleanly. boxers weren't "slow" back then, dude, unless you're watching espn classic or some such S**t and getting a dose of what happens when film is transferred to archive video. if you're talking about style, every boxer listed had a totally unique style. and marciano, frankly (and hardly a favorite of mine, personally) would have probably been the most interesting fight of all.
on the one side, im impressed that you pointed out my typo at all, so kudos on that. but IMHO, get a ahold of reels and watch the legends that bernard hopkins refuses to compare himself to. and the UR GAY stuff is fuckwit material.3313110 - 2

first of all i`m a iron mike tyson fan.i liked his fighting style but to say that frank bruno is the best british fighter is the dummest thing ever. lennox lewis is a great fighter and a great man.althought i never was a fan of him but the guy knocked the F**k out of my boy iron mike.who the F**k is frank bruno or what the F**k is his name. The British don't do Heavyweights. Lewis was supurb, but other than that you'd have to go back to Cooper in the sixties for any real class. Tyson has given us some great entertainment and always looked great against these bums, but put him in front of a real fighter and he was found out for what he really was. A good, short heavyweight without a plan B.

Lewis was born in East London and moved to Canada when he was thirteen. He then boxed for Canada at the 1988 Olympics winning the gold medal after thumping the shite out of Riddick (Ridiculous) Bowe. He turned pro, choosing to fight under the British flag under the advise of his manager Frank Maloney, who thought it would benefit his career. As far as I know, Lewis was fighting as a brit since 1990. In his later career, Lewis said it didn't matter who claimed him. The Brits, where he was born, the Canadians, where he had a glittering amateur career or the Jamaican's, where his mother was born.
